    JOB DESCRIPTION: Plans, directs and coordinates funding activities for a specific department in support of students, programs and facilities. Seeks major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations through donor correspondence, event/reception planning and personal visits. Maintains an active schedule of solicitation, cultivation and stewardship calls to donors and new prospects. Coordinates public relations, donor relations, budget management and the generation of publications and proposals. Provides ongoing feedback to employees concerning their performance. May direct and monitor alumni relations work, including responding to alumni needs and requests. May supervise clerical, professional and volunteer staff. Performs related responsibilities as required.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree and 5 years experience in higher education, development, fund raising or equivalent experience in a non-profit institution.

    Reporting to the Director of Development II for Emory University’s Winship Cancer Institute, the Director of Development is responsible for soliciting major gift activity to support the research, clinical, and educational efforts for Georgia’s only NCI Designated Cancer Center, Winship Cancer Institute. The successful candidate will work to engage donors and facilitate new philanthropic activity via grateful patient and individual outreach, personal meetings, and Winship’s many successful and record setting events. The Director will be able to capably staff the faculty of the institution and serve as an external expert on the basic science and translational research, clinical care, and educational efforts at Winship in such a way that he/she can effectively engage in and advance philanthropic conversations to support that work. Finally, the Director will readily fit into the Winship Development team with a dedicated, collaborative, and professional approach to their career.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with development in an academic setting preferred, particularly in academic medicine and/or a cancer center
    • Experience managing a portfolio of major gift donors
    • Demonstrated ability to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors who have not previously given at a major gift level to an institution
    • Strong writing skills for many types of media are desired, particularly email, personal letters, proposals, and meeting collaterals
    • Some knowledge of cancer research and care
    • Ability to work on multiple projects at one time
    • Willingness to take on projects and problem solve with minimal supervision
    • Knowledge and experience with data analysis and mining reports, event information, and annual giving statistics in order to identify potential new potential donors
    • Knowledge and experience with planned vehicles
    • An ability to productively and gracefully engage in conversations with all constituents including patients, volunteers, faculty, and co-workers.
