JOB DESCRIPTION: Provides support to the SPD manager and OR director and direction to the staff, and facilitates the workflow through the department. Responsible for ensuring all instruments (e.g., exchange carts, par level carts, instrument sets and single peel packs) and emergency supplies meet established quotas. Responsible for cleaning, assembling, packaging and sterilizing of all instruments and equipment according to the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Inc. (CBSPD), the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), and the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) current standards. Incumbents are also accountable for demonstrating awareness of personal and work area safety at all times; using evidence-based practices (EBP) and complying with facility safety policies and procedures in carrying out duties including those for blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases and; keeping knowledge current on aseptic techniques and basic microbiology sufficient to understand the ways diseases and infections are transmitted and the importance of clean and sterile supplies in patient care; attending training in new and improved sterilization practices and developments in the microbiology, bacteriology, and therapeutic practices as they affect the sterile supply operation. Conducts inventories (e.g., orders and stocks medical disposable goods in storage areas and ensures sterile processing of all materials. Provides guidance and monitor quality of work assignments for Sterile Processing Technicians and Supply Technicians. Responds to requests from internal and external customers and actively participate in a continuous quality improvement process. Documents clearly on the OR priority list report items that have been completed and what has not been prepared for the next day cases. Ensures all items listed on the priority list are processed first and communicates with the OR and CS leadership on any delays. Demonstrates ability and willingness to motivate, mentor staff and develop good working relationships with customers and team members. Effectively interacts and cooperates with employees and other people. Proactively works with the SPD Educator and Quality Coordinator in identifying the need for further continuing education/training and professional development. Reports trainees progress to the SPD Educator by example providing direction, motivation and support/starts a new project and make changes. Participates constructively to the success of the team. Demonstrates unity by supporting decisions made in private while maintaining the confidentiality to the department. Reports all incidents of harassment and breaches of confidentiality to the department director. Utilizes advanced expertise and problem-solving skills to assist staff in the performance of their jobs. Handles requests from customers coming to the department in a courteous and productive manner. Consistently follows through with the complete processing of items and supplies received. Accepts and demonstrates responsibility for their timely and accurate delivery to the customer. Is trained to work in all phases of the process in the Main Sterile Processing and Distribution as well as satellite areas and is knowledgeable of all functions of the department and is able to troubleshoot and resolve any apparent problem. Identifies items to be ordered as warehouse stock or non-stock and appropriately establishes the items within the par location, allocates the proper storage requirements and accurately labels the product for identification and traceability. Monitors and adjusts inventory levels in order to mitigate excess inventory and to ensure the end-users have what is needed to perform surgical cases. Works in collaboration with Service Line Coordinators, Nurse Clinical Leaders, Sterile Processing Lead Tech, and all Perioperative staff. Also monitors quality, service and utilization standards. Supervises and coordinates staff in the sterilization and distribution functions of the sterile processing/or material management department shift. This will include staffing, payroll, and first level conflict resolution. Provides real-time decision making to issues that impact shift regarding customer service, staff assignments, and policies and procedures. . Responsible for staffing, evaluating work performance and recommending corrective action as appropriate in accordance with established policies. Coordinates with the Human Resources business partner for Perioperative Services and the Administrator on personnel issues. Establishes strategic goals by gathering pertinent business, financial, service, and operations information; identifying and evaluating trends and options; choosing a course of action; defining objectives; evaluating outcomes. Identify and support the use of technologies and methods to improve productivity, quality performance and overall value.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
-Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
-2 years of relevant experience in a similarly complex surgical services environment. -Thorough knowledge of sterilization techniques. Previous supervisory experience required.
-Must have CRCST and CHL or CIS / CST (Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician, Certified Health Leader, Certified Instrument Specialist, Certified Surgical Technologist).
-Must possess excellent analytical and persuasion skills. Knowledge of personal computer and software to include Excel, Access, Word, & Outlook.
-Proven analytical and problem-solving skills to identify problems then determine and implement appropriate, effective solutions.
-Ability to implement process improvement strategies and quality initiatives.
-Strong written and verbal communications skills with the ability to present complex information to diverse audiences
