Description

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for understanding, communicating, and administering financial policies and financial screening process to patients, patients families, and legal guardians in a hospital setting.
  • Secure maximum reimbursement through up front identification and collection of patient liabilities via bedside, walk-in, phone inquiries prior to and up to the time of service.
  • Review and monitor patients¿ accounts to improve revenue and timely processing of claims.
  • Responsible for financially clearing patients prior to, at the time of service, or during inpatient admission by collecting payment, determining insurance eligibility, and/or evaluating for financial assistance.
  • Requires knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and Third Party carriers, referrals and pre-certification procedures.
  • Maintains a substantial knowledge base of patient financial assistance and co-pay programs available.
  • Financial Counseling position must have knowledge and ability to perform aspects of Emory Healthcare processes from registration to billing.
  • This position requires thorough knowledge of the patient estimate process.
  • The financial counselor position interacts with patients, families, and other hospital support services to assure team efforts in the care and handling of financial arrangements, account inquiry, and account reconciliation.
  • The financial counselor role requires the ability to multi-task efficiently while working in a fast paced environment with a strong attention to detail.
  • Organizational and time management skills are required in order to maintain and prioritize daily work and follow-up on accounts in a timely manner.
  • Completes technical and professional components of patient estimates and follows guidelines associated with the financial clearance policy.
  • Reviews/monitors reports and identifies trends. Processes account adjustments as appropriate per established guidelines.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality; complies with HIPAA and compliance guidelines established by Emory Healthcare.
  • Acts as a liaison between PFS and hospital operations to resolve customer/patient inquiries related to billing and patient/customer satisfaction in a timely manner.
  • Completes COBRA forms and other needed documentation in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with Care Coordination, clinical staff, physician offices, and other internal/external agencies regarding patient resources and to ensure account resolution.
  • Utilizes all available tools to perform benefits verification.
  • Provides excellent customer service to include compassion and empathy while focusing on account resolution.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 years healthcare or related job experience preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to speak and write effectively at a level appropriate for the job.
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, Third Party carriers, referrals and precertification procedures required.
  • The following certifications are preferred: CHAA (Certified Healthcare Access Associate) and CPAR (Certified Patient Account Representative).
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, ICD, and CPT-4 basics.
