Description

The Clinical Ethicist will serve as a key team member for Emory Healthcare supporting Ethics across the Emory Healthcare systemThe Ethicist will join in a vital, expanding Ethics program that is respected interdisciplinarily and invites creative collaboration. In addition to involvement in an active Ethics consult service serving hospitals throughout the system, the Clinical Ethicist will provide multidisciplinary Ethics education, and will work with hospital-based ethics committees throughout Emory Healthcare. This colleague will contribute to development of the system-wide Ethics program and Ethics-related organizational policies, procedures, practice guidelines and ethics scholarship. The Clinical Ethicist will also have the opportunity to participate in the vibrant academic environment of Emory University including collaborative opportunities with the Emory University Center for Ethics and other Ethics programs.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide formal and informal Ethics consultations and support others providing ethics consultation in the system.
  • Participate in continued development and innovation in the system-wide Ethics consult service, the tracking and evaluation of the impact of ethics consultations, and integration with the electronic medical record system.
  • Engage in quality improvement efforts aimed at identifying and addressing root causes of ethical concerns.
  • Participate in and provide support for hospital-based Ethics Committees throughout the Emory Healthcare system.
  • Provide multidisciplinary Ethics education and support system-wide Ethics initiatives.
  • Contribute to the development and review of Ethics-related organizational policies, procedures, and practice guidelines.
  • Contribute to Clinical Ethics scholarship.

 

MINIMUM QUALFICATIONS:

  • Master's or doctoral degree in Ethics or Ethics-related field with expertise or focus in healthcare ethics, clinical ethics or bioethics.
  • A minimum of 5 years of clinical ethics experience in clinical practice settings, providing thoughtful and high-quality healthcare ethics case consultation and facilitating ethics communication with interdisciplinary teams and between teams and patients/families.
  • In-depth knowledge and skills in clinical ethics, ethics case consultation methodologies, and consultation documentation. Proficiency with electronic medical records.
  • Demonstrated ability and a commitment to work sensitively and professionally with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals across multiple disciplines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead focused ethics-related projects or initiatives in a the clinical setting.
  • Excellent teaching and facilitation abilities, both with individuals and groups in formal and informal presentation settings.
  • MINIMUM PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Terminal degree (PhD, JD, MD or equivalent).
  • Certification in healthcare ethics consultation (HEC-C) strongly preferred.
